Fantasy Pelican

With a little extra time on vacation, I was able to get back into my sketch book. The surrounding sea birds offered plenty of inspiration for this fantasy pelican.

Though the differences may appear subtle, my latest doodles are different. They employ an established 3D plane instead of “eye balling” it. They also begin with a basic structure within that plane. These tools are centrally important to the kind of illustration I’m going for.

In watching tutorials, I was challenged to think differently and approach drawing from another angle. Instead of drawing what “appears” correct, rely solely on perspective tools, almost as if you are a 3D program calculating how objects would appear.
